Rainy Day Driving

Driving on a rainy day can be risky. The roads are all wet and slippery and this makes the car lose traction. Strong rainfall can also lessen a driver’s visibility.

To be safe, you should first check your car before driving during a rainy day. One of the things you should check is the windshield. Make sure that it is clean on the outside and in the inside. The interior of the windshield should be cleaned well especially if a smoker usually rides in the car.

The lights of your vehicle should be checked - headlights, brake lights, turn signals, and taillights. Make sure that they are all working. Also check your vehicle’s windshield wipers and see if the blades are still in good condition. When you are already on the road, turn on your headlights and the windshield wipers when the rain starts pouring.

If the rain is pouring really hard, then drive slower than your usual speed. If the weather is really bad, be on the safe side — pull over.

The very first Activist of the Year awards is going to be done this year. This is part of the National Youth Traffic Safety Month which is celebrated in May and Allstate Foundation is open for nominations for the awards.

Two awards would be given. One would be for a teen while the other one would be given to a parent. Allstate Foundation says that to be a recipient of the award, one must have done something great last year so as to give a solution to the high number of teen driving mishaps.

The director of the foundation’s teen driving program, Susan Duchak, stated that they are having the awards as a way of recognizing those individuals who have done extremely well to address the issue. She added, “We want to find examples of the most dedicated, creative work teens and parents are doing to address the teen driving issue, and share these efforts throughout the country.”

March Military Campaign - ever hear of the CJ-4?

Posted by Daniel Strohl on March 18th, 2008

Willys Jeep CJ-4

So maybe it’s not a military vehicle per se, but any vehicle directly derived from the Willys MB gets a nod in my book. Just like Pat Foster, I always wondered about the Jeep designation convention. For example, the CJ-2s and CJ-3s got A or B suffixes, while the CJ-5s through CJ-8s didn’t. (And don’t get me started on the recent switch from TJ, WJ, etc. to JK, WK, etc. Yes, I’m anal about things like that). Point? Yes, they seemed to skip the CJ-4, and nobody seemed to notice until Foster’s two-page article (scanned below) in SIA #166, July-August 1998, in which he tracks down the missing CJ-4.

HMX - universal progress

HMX - driveshaft

Yes, I know it’s been more than a month since I posted on the progress on the HMX. Been shopping around for front suspension rebuild components and taking on a couple other projects which I’ll discuss shortly and just got sidetracked. So to rebuild momentum, I opened up the garage doors over the weekend, changed the oil in the GMC and decided to finally replace the universal joint in the HMX’s driveshaft and bolt that back into place.

HMX - driveshaft

Luckily, I had a spare driveshaft, so I could leave one in the transmission to keep the trans gear oil from spilling out and replace the U-joint on the second. The joint seemed in decent shape, but I bought a new one just to make sure. A little rub with the Scotch-Brite and the yoke was good to go.

And I went with the Precision brand joint, if only because it has the grease nipple (not installed here), while the store brand didn’t. Swapped around a few wheels and tires afterward and realized I could theoretically put the front wheels back on it now while the front suspension is still together, bolt at least one seat back in and drive it around the block. That’s bad, because now I’m starting to get antsy. Only two months left to Musclepalooza VII.
